The Grant Came Through

Hoku found out at twenty past nine on a Tuesday morning and by half past ten she had a headache that has not entirely gone since March.

The grant is a genuinely good thing. Three years of it. It pays for the room, and for two part-time people who have been doing that work unpaid for longer than anybody outside would believe, and it means the families who use that program on a Thursday will still have it on a Thursday in 2029.

She wrote the application herself over five weeks, in the evenings, after the actual work.

It was the fourth one she had written. The first three were declined, and she took each of those personally in a way she would not admit to anybody, and one of them came with feedback that she has never shown to another human being.

So: it came through. It worked. She would write it again.

And when the email arrived she sat looking at it and the first clear thought she had was: now I have to do it for three more years.

She has not said that sentence out loud to one person. It sounds, said out loud, like something an ungrateful woman would say, and Hoku is not ungrateful and she loves that work and she would fight anybody for it.

What got her was a Thursday in April. One of the fathers who comes with his two, a man of about sixty who does not say much, was folding the chairs at the end, which nobody asked him to do, and as he stacked the last one he said: you know we do not come for the room.

Hoku stood in a half-empty hall with a bag on her shoulder and had to look at the floor for a second, and she could not have explained it to a single person in that program.

And the sentence that arrived, standing there, had nothing to do with the funding.

She thought: I have been funded to keep a room open, and there is not one line on that application about the woman who has to be in it.

Let me say the word plainly first

Before we go on I want to be plain about what wealth means on this site, because the word is slippery and I would rather be understood than admired.

Wealth here means a portion. Not a balance, not three years of funding, not two part-time posts. A portion is the old table word for what is set down in front of somebody because they belong at that table, and Scripture takes that ordinary word and does something startling with it: God says of certain people that He Himself is their portion. That is the only sense the word carries here.

And let me be plain about something else before we go further. Nothing on this page suggests the grant was a lesser gift, or that the three declines were more spiritual, or that a truly faithful person would rather have gone on unfunded. That would be an insulting thing to say to a woman who wrote four applications in her evenings. The money was a real answer to a real problem and it worked, and I am glad of it and so is God.

What I want to do is narrower. I want to name the thing that was not on the form, and I would rather the word of God named it, with the Holy Spirit doing the work, than that I guessed at it.

You have nothing to qualify for in this. That is the word's own account of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it stick.

Waiting in silence, which is not the same as waiting for a decision

David writes two lines in the sixty-second psalm that are almost entirely about the direction a person is facing while they wait.

For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.Psalm 62:1-2

Read the first three words. For God alone.

He is not saying he has stopped waiting. He is naming who the waiting is aimed at, which is a completely different thing, and it is the difference between two kinds of tiredness that feel identical from the inside.

There is the tiredness of doing hard work you love. That kind sleeps well.

And there is the tiredness of waiting on a decision from a body that does not know your name and will not be told what any of it cost. That one does not sleep, and four applications in four years will produce it in anybody, and it does not clear the day one of them is approved, because the next round is already on the calendar.

You are not an ungrateful woman. You are somebody who has been waiting toward committees for four years and whose soul has forgotten how to wait toward anybody else, and the written word does not scold anybody for that. It simply names the direction, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes the difference between agreeing with a psalm and a set of shoulders coming down.

And here is what is true of you today, before one thing about 2029 is certain. You are met where the money could not reach. His word says for God alone my soul waits in silence, present tense, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a settled fact in a body rather than a line in a psalm.

What was not on the form

Think about what got you in that hall. It wasn't the chairs. People fold chairs.

It was: you know we do not come for the room. It was a man of sixty telling you, in ten words, the thing that no funding body has any means of measuring and no form has a box for. You were starving to hear that the part of it that costs you had been noticed by somebody, and you still are, and the written word treats that hunger as reasonable rather than as fishing, and it is the Holy Spirit who says so to a person and not merely about them.

That is the honest thing under the headache. It is not that the grant was wrong. It is that a woman can be fully funded and entirely unaccounted for, and there is no version of an application form that would ever have a line for her, which is not a failure of the form.

Here is what the word has already settled about you, so that His Spirit can settle it in you tonight. You have never once been the invisible half of your own work. Jesus asked one blind man what he wanted done for him, which is a question nobody had asked that man in years, and He was in that hall while the last chair was being stacked.
