The kitchen smells of it before he is through the door. That particular smell, warm and slightly sweet, that gets into a house and stays there for an hour.
There is a loaf on the board and half of it is already gone, because the children got in first and tore at it with their hands the way children do. There is butter going soft in a dish. There is a pot of something on the hob with the lid tipped, and the window has steamed at the bottom corner.
He puts his bag down. He looks at all of it. And he does the thing he always does, which nobody in the room has ever noticed, because it happens entirely inside him and takes less than a second.
He checks.
Not the food. The week. He runs the week the way you run your hand along a wall in the dark, feeling for the edge, and the week is fine. It is genuinely fine. The bills that go out this month have gone out. There is food in the house and there will be food in the house on Friday. There is nothing wrong at all.
And he still cannot taste the bread.
That is the thing he would never say out loud, because it sounds ungrateful and it is not ungratefulness, it is something else with no name he knows. He sits down at that table with people he loves and a loaf still warm in the middle of it, and some part of him is standing at the window looking down the road at a month that has not arrived yet.
He learned this somewhere. There was a stretch of years when the checking was not a habit, it was accurate, and the wall in the dark did have an edge, and finding it early was the difference between managing and not managing. He got good at it. He got so good at it that it kept running after the reason stopped, the way a hand keeps going to a pocket for keys you sold with the car.
So he eats. The bread is excellent. He barely notices it, and later he could not tell you whether the pot on the hob was any good, and he loves the people at that table more than his own life.
Now let me stop calling him he.
Because you know that second at the door. Yours might come at the checkout, or when the shopping is put away, or on a Sunday evening when the week is laid out ahead of you and it is all covered and you are still braced. You are not in trouble. That is exactly the thing you cannot explain to anybody. There is enough, and you cannot feel it.
Sit down at whatever table you have. Something on it is for you.
What the word actually means here
Let me be plain about a word before I go a step further, because the word is in the name of this place and it has been used to sell people things.
Wealth, in this message, means one thing and one thing only: the portion that is in your hands today. It never means a rising number. It never means more than you have. There is no promise here that anything will increase, nothing to do, nothing to send, nothing to say a certain number of times, and nothing in this message is tied to money in any direction whatsoever. If anyone ever attaches your breakthrough to your wallet, in either direction, close the page. The Holy Spirit is the one who makes that land in a person rather than merely read true.
And if your week is not covered, if the wall in the dark really does have an edge on it right now, then this particular message is not the one written for you, and I would rather say so than pretend. Real lack is real and it is answered elsewhere in this family of sites, at impossibleharvest.com, which is written for exactly that and does not need repeating here.
This one is for the person who has enough and cannot feel it. Here is what is actually true for them, and it is the whole message.
There is a story about a people in a desert who were fed every morning with something they had never seen before, and the whole arrangement had one rule that drove them mad: it could not be stored. Whatever they gathered was for that day. Anything hoarded overnight was spoiled by morning. Every single day they had to go out and find the day's portion again.
And in the middle of that account there is one line that I want to put under you.
And when they measured it, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no lack.Exodus 16, verse 18
Read both halves. The one who gathered much had nothing left over: the big gatherer got no security out of gathering big. And the one who gathered little had no lack: the small gatherer was not short. Two people with visibly different amounts in their baskets, and the same result at the table.
Which means the enough was never in the basket. It was in the One handing it out.
And that is why the checking at the door has never once made you feel safer, however good you have got at it. You have been trying to make the basket into the security, and the basket has never been able to hold that job. It is not built for it. That is not a flaw in you, and it is certainly not a lack of faith; it is a man carrying a weight that a loaf of bread was never designed to carry. I am not putting my own idea over you: that is what the written word says, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes it land.
Today has bread in it. That is not a small thing and it is not a consolation prize. It is precisely the way He has fed people since the desert, and it was enough there, on ground where nothing grew, for a very long time.
So here is what is being handed to you, at the table, with the loaf still warm and half of it gone.
Today is provided for. Not tomorrow, and I am not going to promise you tomorrow, because a promise like that is not mine to make and you would be right not to trust it. Today. This meal, this evening, this covered week, has come out of the hand of the One who has never yet handed out an empty day.
You are held in the enough. Not held once you have secured next month. Held now, inside a portion you can see and touch and taste, by a God who has fed people this way on purpose since the desert, because a portion that runs out is a portion you have to come back for, and coming back is not a punishment, it is the relationship. That is not my opinion. It is what the word says, and His Spirit is the one who carries it.
So put down the wall you have been feeling along in the dark. There is nothing to find on it tonight. Sit at the table and taste what is actually there.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with it in your hands. The authority to speak over your own table is Christ's, and in Christ it has been given to you, so a person who has been braced for four years has exactly as much standing to speak as anyone. And however He answers, and whatever next month brings, what you are declaring here is already true of you. None of that is mine. It is what Scripture says, and it is His Spirit who does the delivering.
- Fear of the empty week, you are not my provider and you have never fed me once. God gave the portion, and the one who gathered little had no lack, so what is in my two hands is enough and it is His doing. In the name of Jesus I eat today's bread today.
- Tomorrow, you do not get a seat at this table. The Lord is my Shepherd and I shall not want, and a Shepherd who feeds me this evening is not a Shepherd who forgets in the night. Go, and let me taste what is in front of me.
- God, You put this on the table, and I have never once thanked You for it without also bracing. Your word calls this my daily bread, and Your Spirit is the One who makes it taste like enough instead of like a ration. I thank You, because I am held in the enough, and today is provided for.
