Sorcha has helped that family four times in three years and the fourth time was in February and it did not go the way she hoped.
She would not use the word wasted. She has been careful about that word, deliberately, since about March, because she can hear what it does to her when she thinks it.
But the boiler she paid half of has been replaced again by somebody else since, because the first repair was the wrong repair by a man who should not have been doing it. And the arrangement she helped set up in the autumn has fallen over. And the thing she paid for in February went, as far as she can tell, on something that was not the thing.
She is not angry with them. That is not the situation and she wants it understood. They are three people in a genuinely difficult set of circumstances, and one of them is unwell in a way that makes decisions harder than anybody outside a house like that understands.
What Sorcha has is a tiredness. A very particular tiredness that arrived some time in the spring and has not gone. It is the feeling of pouring something carefully into a container and hearing it hit the ground.
She has kept helping. She helped again in June. That is the part she finds strangest about herself.
What got her was a woman at the place she volunteers, who has done this work for a very long time and who does not know one thing about Sorcha's situation. They were washing up. And this woman said, apropos of nothing, in the tone of somebody who has said it a thousand times: the trouble with most of us is we think we are posting a parcel. We are not posting a parcel. It has already been received before it leaves your hand.
It has already been received before it leaves your hand.
Sorcha stood at a sink in a church kitchen with her hands in the water and had to stay looking down, and she could not have explained it to anybody in that building.
And the sentence that arrived, standing there, had nothing to do with the boiler.
She thought: I have spent three years tracking parcels, and I have never once thought about who signed for them.
Let me say the word properly first
Before we go on I want to be plain about what wealth means on this site, because the word is slippery and I would rather be honest than impressive with a woman standing at a sink.
Wealth here means a portion. Not a balance, not what four rounds of helping have cost, not what is left. A portion is the old table word for what is set down in front of somebody because they belong at that table, and Scripture takes that ordinary word and does something remarkable with it: God says of certain people that He Himself is their portion. That is the only sense the word carries here.
And here is the paragraph that matters most, said plainly. There is no ask on this page. Nothing here suggests you give anything to anybody, there is no link and no cause anywhere in it, and this site will never once tell you that generosity produces a return, in any form, however carefully it is worded. That wire does not exist here and it never will. You helped a family four times. That is between you and them and God, and this article has one interest in it: the tiredness that arrived in the spring.
That is the whole job. Not to grade the help, and not to tell you the family will change. To stand at the sink with you, and I would rather the word of God stood there, with the Holy Spirit doing the work, than that I guessed at what that tiredness is.
You are being spoken to here rather than spoken about. The written word says it, and His Spirit is the one carrying it across.
Somebody signed for it
There is a sentence in Matthew twenty-five, at the end of a scene about a king separating people, that is one of the strangest things Jesus ever said about ordinary help.
And the King will answer them, Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.Matthew 25:40
Read the last four words and then read them again.
He does not say it counted as though you had done it to me. He does not say I noticed. He says you did it to me, which is a statement about where the act landed rather than about how it was scored.
Which means the arrival is not at the end of a chain of outcomes. It is not conditional on the boiler being repaired properly, or the arrangement holding, or the money going where you hoped. The moment it left your hand it was received, by Him, and everything that happened afterward in that house is a second story with its own difficulties and its own grace and its own long slow work in it.
You are not naive and you have not been a fool. You are somebody who has been measuring arrival by outcome, which is what everybody does, and the written word does not scold anybody for that. It relocates the receiving, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes the difference between agreeing with that verse and a tiredness actually lifting.
And here is what is true of you today, before one thing in that house changes. You are provided for and your hands are open. His word says you did it to me, past tense, done, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a settled fact in a body rather than a lovely thought.
What the tiredness is actually made of
Think about what got you at that sink. It wasn't advice. That woman was not advising anybody.
It was: it has already been received before it leaves your hand. It was somebody who has done this for decades handing you, in one sentence, the thing nobody had told you in three years. You were starving to know it had arrived somewhere, and you still are, and the written word treats that hunger as reasonable rather than as needing to see results, and it is the Holy Spirit who says so to a person and not merely about them.
That is the honest thing under the tiredness. It is not resentment and it is not compassion fatigue, exactly. It is what happens to a person who has been giving into what they believe is a hole, and the only thing that ever fixes that particular tiredness is finding out there was a floor.
Here is what the word has already settled about you, so that His Spirit can settle it in you tonight. Nothing you handed over hit the ground. Jesus watched a poor woman put in a very small amount and announced its value out loud on the spot, without waiting to see what the treasury did with it, and He was in that church kitchen while your hands were in the water.
So here is the turn, and it is not that you have been taken advantage of and it is not that you should keep giving.
The gift already arrived, right now, before one thing in that family's circumstances is any different and with nothing here promising that it will be. Scripture says you did it to me, in the past tense, and it names no outcome anywhere in the sentence as the condition of arrival. His Spirit is the one who carries that off a page and into a woman at a sink.
Receiving it is not deciding what to do about June or September. It is agreeing about where it went. The tiredness is welcome to stay in the kitchen while you do it. It gets no vote on who received it.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with one hand open and turned upward. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority in these words is His, delegated and never earned, carried by the Holy Spirit who was in that kitchen while the washing up was going on. Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that faith the size of a mustard seed is enough, and then named the part that settles it: speak to the mountain. So name the mountain honestly. It is not the family and it is not the boiler. The mountain is the sound you have been hearing since the spring, of something carefully poured hitting the ground. Speak to that one, and however God answers and whatever He does with that house after this, it was received before it left your hand.
- Tiredness that settled after it was not used the way I hoped, you are not the end of this, and you are answered here. Scripture says you did it to me, in the past tense, and an arrival that has already happened cannot be undone by anything that went on afterward.
- Sound of something carefully poured hitting the ground, in the name of Jesus get out of my kitchen tonight. Three years of measuring arrival by outcome put that sound in my ears, and Christ is the One who signed for every single one of them.
- God, You are my portion, and Your word says that what was done for the least of these was done for You. I thank You, because Your Spirit says it has already been received before it leaves my hand, and my hand is open and turned over and it landed.
