The Two in the Morning Check

This message is for the habit of checking the balance at two in the morning in a week when there is genuinely nothing wrong, and the fear that will not go back to sleep afterward

Nadia has done it four nights this week, and this is a good week, which is the part that has started to frighten her.

There is nothing wrong. That is the first thing to say and she would want it said. The rent went out on the first and it went out fine. Her hours are steady for the first time in three years. There is food in the flat and a bit put by and a coat she bought new in October, actually new, not from anywhere, and she stood in the shop and paid for it without a calculation running underneath.

And at about two in the morning, four nights out of seven, she wakes up and reaches for her phone and checks.

She knows what it is going to say. That is what she cannot explain to anybody. She is not checking because she does not know. She checked at ten. Nothing has happened between ten and two. She checks anyway, and she reads the number, and there is about one and a half seconds of something like relief, and then it is gone, and she lies there in the dark with her heart going.

She was twenty-two the year it was genuinely bad. She does not talk about that year. It lasted fourteen months and it involved a great deal of arithmetic done standing up in a shop doorway, and she got through it, and everybody who knows her says she is remarkable, and she cannot stand being called remarkable.

Because what nobody sees is that she never came home. The bad year ended and she stayed in it.

What got her was a Tuesday, in the kitchen at work, of all places. A woman she barely knows, who is about sixty and has worked there forever, watched her stand at the kettle and not make anything for about a minute and a half, and then said, without any particular drama: love. You're allowed to have today.

You're allowed to have today.

Nadia stood in a work kitchen holding an empty mug and had to turn around and face the window, and she could not have explained it to a single person in that building.

And the sentence that arrived, standing there, had nothing to do with money at all.

She thought: I have been living every day as if it belonged to the year I am afraid of, and somebody just told me today is mine.

Let me say the word properly first

Before anything else I want to be plain about what wealth means on this site, because the word is slippery and I would rather be clear with you than clever.

Wealth here means a portion. Not a balance, not a buffer, not a number that finally goes quiet. A portion is the old table word for what is set down in front of somebody because they belong at that table, and Scripture takes that ordinary word and does something astonishing with it: God says of certain people that He Himself is their portion. That is the only sense the word carries here.

And this article is for one particular reader, so let me be exact about who. This is for the person who has enough this week and cannot feel it. If you are genuinely short, if the number really is the problem and there is a date and a knot in your stomach that is telling you the truth, then nothing on this page is asking you to feel content about that, and I would be ashamed of an article that did. Real lack is real and it deserves a real answer, and impossibleharvest.com in this same family is built for exactly that. What I want to look at is the two in the morning check on a week when the number is fine, and I would rather the word of God did the looking, with the Holy Spirit doing the work, than that I guessed at it.

Today has enough of its own

Jesus says one sentence about tomorrow that people usually hear as a scolding and that is not one at all.

Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.Matthew 6:34

Read the second half, because that is the part almost nobody quotes. He does not say there is no trouble. He says each day comes with its own and that the day's own is enough for it. That is not a promise of an easy life. It is a description of how the weight is distributed, and it is one of the most practical things ever said out loud.

What you have been doing at two in the morning is carrying a Tuesday from a year that is over and a Tuesday that has not arrived, in a body that was built to carry one day.

You are not fragile and you are not ungrateful. You are somebody whose nervous system learned something in fourteen months that it has not been told it can stop doing. The written word does not scold anybody for that, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes the difference between agreeing with a verse and actually being able to put something down.

And here is what is already true of you: you have today. Present tense, in a dark bedroom, before anything about next year is settled. His word says the day's own is sufficient for the day, and His Spirit is the one who makes that land in a body rather than only in a mind.

What the checking is actually asking for

Think about what got you at that kettle. It wasn't information. You'd have told that woman your exact balance if she'd asked.

It was: you're allowed to have today. It was permission, from somebody outside your own head, to stop guarding a day you had already been given. You were starving to be told you could stop. You still are, and the written word treats that hunger as reasonable rather than as weakness, and it is the Holy Spirit who says so to a person and not merely about them.

That is the honest thing under the habit. The phone is not being asked for a number. It is being asked for reassurance that nothing has come for you in the night, and a number cannot give that, which is exactly why the relief lasts a second and a half.

And here is what the word has already settled about you, so that His Spirit can settle it in you tonight. You were never handed the job of guarding tomorrow. God did not put you on watch. Jesus told a crowd of people who genuinely had very little that their Father knows what they need, and He was not making light of anything, and He has been in that room at two in the morning every one of those four nights.

The breakthrough

So here is the turn, and it is not that you should be more grateful and it is not that the fear is silly.

You have today, right now, in the dark, before you know one thing about the next three years. Scripture says the day's own trouble is sufficient for the day, and it does not attach a condition anywhere in the sentence about how bad a previous year was. His Spirit is the one who carries that off a page and into a body that has been on watch since it was twenty-two.

Receiving it is not being sure of next year first. It is standing down from a post nobody assigned you. The habit is welcome to stay in the room while you do it. It gets no vote on whose day this is.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud with that thing in both hands. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority in these words is His, delegated and never earned, carried by the Holy Spirit who has been in that bedroom at two every time. Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that faith the size of a mustard seed is enough, and then named the part that settles it: speak to the mountain. So name the mountain honestly. It is not the balance and it is not the rent. The mountain is the belief you formed at twenty-two, that a day is only ever the front edge of the next bad year. Speak to that one, and however God answers and whatever He does with the years after this, today was already given long before you opened your mouth.

  1. Two in the morning check, you are not proof that something is coming, and you are answered here. Scripture says the day's own trouble is sufficient for the day, and a day that comes with its own portion does not need me carrying next March in the dark.
  2. Fear that this week is only the front edge of another bad year, in the name of Jesus you are put out of my bedroom tonight. Fourteen months taught my body to stand watch, Christ is the One who keeps the gate, and He is keeping it now.
  3. God, You are my portion, and Your word says my Father knows what I need before I ask. I thank You, because Your Spirit says I am allowed to have today, and I am holding today in both hands right now and it is enough.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
