The Recipe Box and the Photographs

Elena's daughter asked her, on the phone, in the middle of a completely different conversation, what the most valuable thing in the house was.

She was asking about insurance. She works in insurance. It was a work question asked absently by somebody who was also looking at a screen.

And Elena said, without thinking: the recipe box.

Then there was a pause on the line, and her daughter laughed and said no, Mamá, valuable, and Elena said yes, I heard you, and then they moved on to something else, and Elena stood in her own hallway for a while afterward with the phone in her hand.

Because it is true. It is a shoebox. There are cards in it in three different handwritings, two of which belong to women who are dead, and one card that is a page torn out of a school exercise book with a nine year old's writing on it because Elena made her write it down that afternoon and has never regretted anything less.

And beside it on the shelf there are the photographs, which are not in albums and never will be, and which include one of her father standing in a doorway that no longer exists in a country she has not been to in thirty-one years.

Nobody has ever put a figure on any of it. Nobody could. If the house were emptied tomorrow by strangers with a van, they would leave the shoebox on the shelf, and they would be right to, and that is the strangest fact she has ever noticed about her own life.

She is not in trouble. The house is fine. There is nothing coming, and this is not that kind of story.

What got her was the following Sunday. Her granddaughter, who is nine, the same age as the handwriting, was in the kitchen and pulled a card out of the box and read it out badly, in Spanish, laughing at herself, and then said: this is Bisabuela's, isn't it. I can tell. She does the thing with the little drawings.

I can tell.

Elena stood at her own stove with a spoon in her hand and had to stop stirring, and she could not have explained it to a single person in that kitchen.

And the sentence that arrived, standing there, had nothing to do with insurance.

She thought: I have a whole second house in this house, and I have never once counted it, because nobody ever taught me that counting was allowed.

Let me say the word properly

Before we go on I want to be plain about what wealth means on this site, because the word is slippery and I would rather be clear than clever with a woman standing at her own stove.

Wealth here means a portion. Not a balance, not a valuation, not what a stranger with a van would take. A portion is the old table word for what is set down in front of somebody because they belong at that table, and Scripture takes that ordinary word and does something astonishing with it: God says of certain people that He Himself is their portion. That is the only sense the word carries here.

And let me say plainly what this article refuses to do. It will not predict anything. Nothing here warns you that the house is at risk, and nothing here uses the fear of losing it to do the work, because leaning on somebody's fear to teach them something true is a cheap way to do an honest job. What I want to do is narrower. I want to look at the second house inside your house, and I would rather the word of God did the looking, with the Holy Spirit doing the work, than that I guessed at it.

Rejoice that it is written down

There is a moment in Luke where seventy-two people come back from a trip absolutely delighted with what has happened, and Jesus redirects their joy in one sentence.

Nevertheless, do not rejoice in this, that the spirits are subject to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.Luke 10:20

He does not tell them off. That is the first thing. What they had seen was real and He says so in the sentence before this one. He simply moves the joy off the visible result and onto a record none of them had seen and none of them could produce.

Written. Somewhere else. By Somebody else. Not in their handwriting, not in their keeping, not subject to being carried out of anywhere by anybody.

That is the second account, and it is the one nobody ever taught you to count, because it does not behave like an account at all. It behaves like a shoebox on a shelf that a thief would leave behind.

You are not a sentimental woman for the recipe box. You are somebody who has known the truth about her own house for years and has never once heard it said out loud by an authority she trusted. The written word does not scold anybody for that, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a sentence spoken to seventy-two people on a road and lands it on a woman at a stove.

And here is what is already true of you this evening, before you change anything about the house. You are rich in the place that holds. His word says your name is written in heaven, present tense, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a settled fact in a body rather than a doctrine in a book.

What nobody ever counted

Think about what got you at the stove. It wasn't the card. You have read that card a hundred times.

It was: I can tell. It was a nine year old recognizing her great-grandmother's hand across two deaths and thirty-one years and an ocean, without being taught, from the little drawings. You were starving to see something arrive on the far side, and you still are, and the written word treats that hunger as reasonable rather than as sentiment, and it is the Holy Spirit who says so to a person and not merely about them.

That is the honest thing under the shoebox. It is not that you love old cards. It is that everything in that box is proof that some things go across, and you have never once let yourself call that wealth, because nobody has ever put a number beside it.

Here is what the word has already settled about you, so that His Spirit can settle it in you tonight. The most valuable thing in your house is exactly what you said it was, and you were right the first time, without thinking, on the phone. Jesus kept eating with people rather than acquiring anything, for three years, and He was in that kitchen before the box came off the shelf.
