Marcelle can still tell you what she was wearing, which is how you know an eleven year old moment is still doing work.
She was twenty-six. She was in the second row, not the front, which is a detail she is careful about because she has told the story enough times to know how it starts to drift. It was the last night of something. The room was warm and everybody was tired in the good way.
And a woman she had never met before and has never seen since came down off the platform and stopped in front of her and said a handful of sentences about a door, and about a season of being hidden, and about something that would be built through her that she would not have to strive for.
Marcelle wrote it on the back of a program in the car. She still has the program. It is in a box with her grandmother's rings.
She is thirty-seven now.
And what she would tell you, if you asked her directly, is that she believes God speaks. She would not take that back and this article is not going to ask her to. What she would say more quietly, and only to somebody she trusted, is that at some point in the eleven years the thing on the back of that program stopped being a word and turned into an arrangement.
She turned down two things she should not have turned down, because they did not look like a door. She stayed somewhere four years too long because it felt like the hidden season. She went through a stretch in her early thirties where she checked, privately, almost daily, for signs, the way a person checks a tracking number.
And in March she sat in a car outside a building she does not go into anymore and she said out loud, to nobody: I have kept my side of this.
Which is the sentence that gave the whole thing away, and she knew it the moment it was out of her mouth.
Right behind it came the shame. Because Marcelle would never say God owes her anything. She has taught other people that He does not.
What finally cracked it open was a friend, an ordinary friend, not a spiritual one, who rang her about something else entirely and at the end of the call said: hey, by the way. I love you regardless of literally anything you do. That's all. Bye.
Regardless of literally anything you do.
Marcelle sat in a parked car with her phone still warm in her hand and found that her face had gone, and she could not have explained it to one person who had been in that room eleven years ago.
And the sentence that arrived, sitting there, had nothing to do with the door.
She thought: somewhere in eleven years I turned a gift into a receipt, and I have been waiting at a counter ever since.
Let me say the word properly
Before anything else I want to be plain about what wealth means on this site, because the word is slippery and I would rather be clear than clever with a woman sitting in a parked car.
Wealth here means a portion. Not a balance, not a promotion, not what is owed. A portion is the old table word for what is set down in front of somebody because they belong at that table, and Scripture takes that ordinary word and does something outrageous with it: God says of certain people that He Himself is their portion. That is the only sense the word carries here, and it is not a smaller helping given to the people whose door never opened.
And let me be as plain the other way. Money is not wicked, wanting your life to amount to something is not a sin, and taking a word seriously is not foolishness. Nothing on this page ties what God does to what you have or to what you give, and that wire does not exist here and never will. If you are genuinely short, if there is a date and a figure and a knot in your stomach, that is a real thing and it deserves a real answer, and impossibleharvest.com in this same family is built for exactly that.
Now hear this part carefully, because it matters more than anything else in this article. I am not going to tell you that word was false. I was not in the room, I do not know that woman's name, and I would not use it if I did. I am not going to mock her and I am not going to mock you for having believed her, and anybody who does either of those things is doing something cheap. Some words take decades. Some words are fulfilled in ways nobody would have recognized on the night. What I want to look at is not the word. It is the thing you built underneath it, and I would rather the word of God did the looking, with the Holy Spirit doing the work, than that I guessed.
Faithful is not the same word as indebted
Paul writes one line to a younger man who was watching things fall apart, and it is one of the shortest sentences in his letters.
If we are faithless, he remains faithful, for he cannot deny himself.2 Timothy 2:13
Look at what it does not say. It does not say He remains faithful to the arrangement. It does not say He remains faithful to the timetable. It says He remains faithful, full stop, because of what He is, and it grounds that in His own nature rather than in anybody's performance including yours.
That distinction is the entire article. A faithful God is not a God in your debt. A debtor's faithfulness runs out when the account is settled. A faithful God has no account to settle, which is precisely why His faithfulness does not run out.
You are not a foolish woman for the eleven years. You are somebody who was handed something living and, over time, and under pressure, and in the perfectly human need to know where you stand, laminated it. The written word does not shame anybody for that, and it is the Holy Spirit who lets a person hear it in a parked car as relief instead of as a correction.
And here is the sentence that costs something. If God had ever signed the arrangement you made out of that word, you would have every right to your complaint in that car. The reason the complaint has nowhere to go is not that you waited badly, or checked too often, or lacked something. It is that He was never the second party to a contract. He was the Giver of a gift, the entire time, and a giver cannot default.
What the eleven years were actually doing
You are His, right now, in that car, before you know one thing about the door or the building or the next decade. His word says He remains faithful in the present tense, and it attaches no condition anywhere in the sentence, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a fact in a body rather than a phrase in a book.
Think about what actually broke you open. It wasn't the March afternoon. You'd known for a while.
It was a friend saying I love you regardless of literally anything you do, and then hanging up, because she meant it so plainly that she did not think it needed a conversation. You were starving to be loved outside the tracking number. You still are, and there is nothing immature about it.
Here is what the word has already settled about you, so that His Spirit can settle it in you tonight. The eleven years were not thrown away. Not one of them bought a door, and not one of them was wasted, and both of those are true at the same time. Jesus spent thirty years of a thirty-three year life doing nothing anybody would have written down, and nobody has ever suggested that was a delay, and He was in that car before the call came in.
So here is the turn, and it is not that the word was a lie and it is not that you should have believed less.
You are held by a faithfulness that has nothing to do with a timetable, right now, in that car, and no promise is being made to you here about the door. Scripture says if we are faithless He remains faithful, for He cannot deny Himself, and it names no other condition anywhere in the sentence. His Spirit is the one who carries that off a page and into a parked hour in March.
Receiving it is not resolving the eleven years first. It is tearing up the contract and keeping the Giver. The waiting can stay in the car while you do it. It gets no vote on whose you are.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with your hands unclenched and open. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority in these words is His, delegated and never earned, carried by the Holy Spirit who was in that meeting eleven years ago and has been in every year since. Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that faith the size of a mustard seed is enough, and then named the part that settles it: speak to the mountain. So name the mountain honestly. It is not the woman on the platform and it is not the program in the box. The mountain is the receipt, and the shame that arrived behind the words I have kept my side of this. Speak to that one, and however God answers and whatever He does with the years after this, His faithfulness was never resting on your accuracy.
- Contract I made out of a word I was given, you are not the covenant between me and God, and you are torn up here. Scripture says He remains faithful because He cannot deny Himself, and a faithfulness grounded in what He is cannot be grounded in what I did with a program.
- Shame that arrived behind the words I have kept my side of this, in the name of Jesus get out of this car. Eleven years of waiting were seen and none of them were a payment, and Christ is the Giver and a Giver cannot default.
- God, You are my portion and Your word says You remain faithful even when I am faithless. I thank You, because Your Spirit says I love you regardless of literally anything you do, and I am putting the receipt down and taking the gift with both hands.
