Ariel has been doing it for six years through a woman at a charity who is very good at her job, and the whole arrangement works, and he has begun to find it unbearable.
It is straightforward. Twice a year he tells her what he can do. She knows the situations. She matches it to whoever is in front of her that month. Nobody is told where it came from and Ariel is never told where it went, and the entire thing was his own idea and he set it up that way deliberately because he had read enough and thought about it enough to know that this was the right shape.
It is still the right shape. He would set it up the same way tomorrow.
And somewhere in year four something started that he did not expect and cannot argue himself out of. Not doubt. Not suspicion that it is being wasted, because he has no reason to suspect that and he trusts that woman completely.
It is a restlessness. He described it once to himself as the feeling of dropping a stone into a well that never makes a sound.
He has caught himself, twice in the last year, phrasing a question in his head that he would never actually ask, and being ashamed of the phrasing before it was even finished.
What got him was his uncle, who is eighty-one and farms in a way nobody farms any more and does not know one thing about any of this. They were walking a field edge in the summer, and the uncle stopped at a corner where nothing had been cut and said, entirely by way of conversation: my father left this corner and his father left it. We have never once known who came for it. That is the whole of the mitzvah, Ariel. If you knew, it would be a different thing entirely.
If you knew, it would be a different thing entirely.
Ariel stood at the edge of a field with his hands in his pockets and had to look at the ground, and he could not have explained it to anybody at that table later.
And the sentence that arrived, standing there, had nothing to do with the charity.
He thought: I have been treating the silence as a defect in the arrangement, and my uncle just told me it is the arrangement.
Say the word properly first
Before anything else I want to be plain about what wealth means on this site, because the word is slippery and I would rather be clear than clever with a man standing at the edge of a field.
Wealth here means a portion. Not a balance, not what goes twice a year, not what any of it accomplished. A portion is the old table word for what is set down in front of somebody because they belong at that table, and Scripture takes that ordinary word and does something astonishing with it: God says of certain people that He Himself is their portion. That is the only sense the word carries here.
And here is the paragraph that matters most, said plainly. There is no ask on this page. Nothing here suggests you give anything to anybody, there is no link and no cause anywhere in it, and this site will never once tell you that generosity produces a return, in any form, however carefully it is put. That wire does not exist here and it never will. You set something up six years ago. That is between you and God, and this article has one interest in it: the silence.
That is the whole job. Not to grade the arrangement, and not to promise you will one day be told. To stand at the field edge with you, and I would rather the word of God stood there, with the Holy Spirit doing the work, than that I guessed at what the restlessness is.
You are already named in this. Scripture says it, and His Spirit is the one who says it to a person rather than about one.
The law that built the silence in on purpose
There is a commandment in Leviticus about harvest that is unlike almost every other charitable instruction ever written, and the Holy Spirit has been keeping it for people who give into silence.
When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap your field right up to its edge, neither shall you gather the gleanings after your harvest. And you shall not strip your vineyard bare, neither shall you gather the fallen grapes of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the sojourner: I am the LORD your God.Leviticus 19:9-10
Read what it does not say.
It does not say take a portion of your harvest to the poor. It does not say identify who is in need and deliver it. It says leave it. Leave the corner uncut. Leave the fallen grapes where they fell. Walk away from a part of your own field and do not come back to it.
Which means the giver is not present at the receiving. By design. The whole mechanism is built so that the one who leaves it is somewhere else when it is taken, and never learns who came, and cannot be thanked, and cannot see what difference it made.
That is not a gap in the law. It is the law. The anonymity is not a side effect of somebody's modesty. It is engineered into the instruction, in the text, in the imperative mood.
You are not ungrateful and you are not doubting anybody. You are somebody who has been reading a silence as an absence of information when it is in fact a feature of the design, and the written word does not scold anybody for that. It shows you the corner, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes the difference between understanding a commandment and being able to walk away from a field edge.
And here is what is true of you tonight, before you know one single outcome. You are provided for and your hands are open. His word says leave them, present tense imperative, and it ends the sentence with I am the LORD your God, which is the only party in the arrangement who does see, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a settled thing in a man rather than an interesting piece of law.
What the restlessness is actually made of
Think about what got you at that corner. It wasn't the instruction. Your uncle was not instructing you.
It was: if you knew, it would be a different thing entirely. It was an eighty-one year old naming, in one sentence, the exact structure of the thing you built yourself six years ago and had begun to experience as a fault. You were starving to be told the silence was on purpose, and you still are, and the written word treats that hunger as reasonable rather than as controlling, and it is the Holy Spirit who says so to a man and not merely about him.
That is the honest thing under the restlessness. It is not suspicion. It is that a human being cannot easily do something for six years and never once close the loop, and closing the loop is exactly what the design forbids, and nobody had ever told you that the discomfort was the shape of the obedience rather than a problem with your heart.
Here is what the word has already settled about you, so that His Spirit can settle it in you tonight. Somebody is standing in the corner of that field. Jesus said the Father sees what is done where nobody is looking, which is the same sentence as the last clause of the commandment, and He was at that field edge in the summer before your uncle spoke.
So here is the turn, and it is not that the arrangement is wrong and it is not that you should ask for a report.
You are provided for right now, at that field edge, with the silence exactly as complete as it actually is and nothing here promising you will ever be told anything. Scripture puts the anonymity into the imperative and closes the sentence with the one Person who does see. His Spirit is the one who carries that off a page and into a man looking at the ground.
Receiving it is not finding out. It is agreeing that the not finding out is the arrangement and not a fault in it. The restlessness is welcome to walk the field edge with you. It gets no vote on whether anybody came for the corner.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with one hand open and turned upward. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority in these words is His, delegated and never earned, carried by the Holy Spirit who was at that field edge in the summer. Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that faith the size of a mustard seed is enough, and then named the part that settles it: speak to the mountain. So name the mountain honestly. It is not the charity and it is not the woman who does the matching. The mountain is the question you have caught yourself phrasing twice this year and were ashamed of before you finished it. Speak to that one, and however God answers and whatever He does with the years after this, the corner was already being taken.
- Silence where the outcome should be, you are not neglect, and you are answered here. Scripture commands a man to leave the corner and walk away from it, and a silence written into the imperative mood was never a fault in the arrangement.
- Question I have caught myself phrasing twice this year, in the name of Jesus get out of my head and off this field edge. Six years of dropping a stone into a well with no sound made you, and Christ is the One standing in the corner where I am not.
- God, You are my portion, and Your word ends that commandment by saying I am the LORD your God, which names the only party who sees. I thank You, because Your Spirit says if you knew, it would be a different thing entirely, and my hand is open and turned over and I am walking away from the corner.
