She Went Home With Nothing

Marlene did it out of the bottom rather than the top, which is a distinction nobody in that building would have understood if she had tried to explain it.

The collection was for a family in the church who had lost the father in September. It was announced properly, and the amounts people put in were their own business, and nobody stood at the front and read anything out, and that is all correct and Marlene would defend it.

She put in what she put in on a Sunday morning at the back, quickly, the way she does everything.

It was not spare. That is the whole of it. It was the money she had put by in an envelope in a drawer at home, which is how she has managed since 1994, and there was one purpose for that envelope and it was not this.

She did not tell anybody. Nobody asked. Nobody would.

And she walked home, twenty-five minutes, the way she does every Sunday, and by the time she got to her own door she had a feeling she did not recognize and could not name and did not much like.

She has thought about it since and the closest she can get is this: she wanted somebody to have seen.

And she is ashamed of that, because she knows exactly what that sounds like, and because she has told young women in that church for twenty years that the left hand should not know what the right hand is doing, and she meant it, and she still means it.

What got her was a Tuesday. She was at the bus stop and the mother from that family was there, and they talked about nothing, and as the bus came the woman said, out of nowhere and looking straight ahead: somebody gave who did not have it to give. I do not know who. I could feel it in the number.

Marlene sat on a bus with her bag on her knees and had to look out of the window for four stops, and she could not have explained it to one person on that route.

And the sentence that arrived, sitting there, had nothing to do with the envelope.

She thought: I did not want the credit. I wanted somebody to know it was real, and somebody did, and it was not anybody I would have expected.

Let me say the word properly

Before we go on I want to be plain about what wealth means on this site, because the word is slippery and I would rather be clear than clever with a woman on a bus with her bag on her knees.

Wealth here means a portion. Not a balance, not an envelope in a drawer, not thirty years of managing. A portion is the old table word for what is set down in front of somebody because they belong at that table, and Scripture takes that ordinary word and does something outrageous with it: God says of certain people that He Himself is their portion. That is the only sense the word carries here.

And here is the paragraph that matters most, said plainly. There is no ask on this page. Nothing here suggests you give anything to anybody, there is no link and no cause anywhere in it, and this site will never once tell you that giving produces a return, in any form, however softly it is put. That wire does not exist here and it never will. You put something in a collection on a Sunday. That is between you and that family and God, and this article has one interest in it: the twenty-five minute walk home.

That is the whole job. Not to grade the gift, and not to tell you it will come back to you, because it may well not and nobody here is authorized to say otherwise. To sit on the bus with you, and I would rather the word of God sat there, with the Holy Spirit doing the work, than that I guessed at that feeling.

You have nothing to qualify for in this. That is the word's own account of it, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes it stick.

Somebody was sitting opposite the box

There is a short scene in Mark that people usually preach at the wrong person, and read carefully it is one of the tenderest things in the Gospels.

And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.Mark 12:41-44

Start with the first six words, because everybody skips them. He sat down opposite the treasury and watched.

He chose a seat with a view of the box. That is what the text says. He was not passing. He sat down where He could see what people were putting in, and He stayed there long enough to watch many of them, and nobody in that courtyard knew He was doing it.

Then read what He notices. Not the amount. He notices the ratio. He knows, in a way nobody in that building could have known, the difference between the top and the bottom, and He announces it out loud, to His friends, about a woman who never found out He had said anything at all.

And notice, honestly, what He does not do. He does not promise her anything. She goes home with nothing. The text does not say her needs were met that week, and I am not going to say it either, because it is not there and this site does not make up returns.

What she got is that He saw, and that He said so, and that we are still reading it.

You are not a proud woman for that walk home. You are somebody who gave from the bottom, which nobody in that building could see, and whose heart wanted one witness, and the written word does not scold anybody for that. It puts a witness in a seat opposite the box, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes the difference between reading that scene and knowing you were in it.

And here is what is true of you today, before one thing about that envelope is refilled. You are provided for and your hands are open. His word shows Him watching and speaking, present tense on the page, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a settled fact in a body rather than a story about somebody else.

What the walk home was about

Think about what got you on that bus. It wasn't recognition. That woman does not know your name in connection with any of this.

It was: I could feel it in the number. It was somebody in genuine need noticing, without knowing who, that the total contained something that had cost somebody more than it should have. You were starving for one witness, and you still are, and the written word treats that hunger as reasonable rather than as pride, and it is the Holy Spirit who says so to a person and not merely about them.

That is the honest thing under the shame. You did not want the credit and you would have hated the credit. You wanted to know that a thing done out of the bottom of a life registers somewhere as different from a thing done off the top, and no collection plate on earth can tell the difference.

Here is what the word has already settled about you, so that His Spirit can settle it in you tonight. Somebody was sitting opposite the box and He knew the ratio. Jesus called His friends over specifically to point out a gift nobody else in the building had noticed, and He was on that twenty-five minute walk the whole way.
