Gareth has been carrying it since the second week of January and the thing he cannot work out is why it feels like a secret rather than a decision.
There is a lad at work, twenty-three, who got himself into something. Not criminal. Just twenty-three, and a bad arrangement with a company that should not be allowed to make arrangements with twenty-three year olds, and a spiral that was about six weeks from becoming the kind of thing a person does not come back from quickly.
Gareth found out because he is the person on that site people talk to at half past seven in the morning.
He sorted it. Not all of it. Enough of it that the spiral stopped, and he did it in a way that involved the lad paying back something small and manageable so that the boy would have his dignity, and both of them know that the something small is not the amount.
The amount was the caravan.
Not a joke and not a small thing. Nine years he and Sue had been putting a bit aside, and they had talked about it more times than either of them would admit, and it was not going to be this year but it was going to be a year, and now it is not.
Sue does not know.
That is the part. He has had nine months and he has not said it. Not because she would be angry, because she would not be, and he knows that better than he knows most things. He cannot work out what he is protecting.
What got him was in November. They were in the car and she was talking about something else entirely and she said, out of nowhere and not looking at him: whatever it is you did in January, I hope you know I'd have said yes.
Whatever it is you did in January.
Gareth kept driving and did not say anything for about a mile, and he could not have explained it to a single man on that site.
And the sentence that arrived, driving, had nothing to do with the caravan.
He thought: she knew in January. She has known the whole time, and she has been waiting nine months for me to be able to say it, and I have been carrying a good thing as though it were a bad one.
Let me say the word properly first
Before anything else I want to be plain about what wealth means on this site, because the word is slippery and I would rather be clear than clever with a man driving and not saying anything.
Wealth here means a portion. Not a balance, not nine years of putting a bit aside, not a caravan. A portion is the old table word for what is set down in front of somebody because they belong at that table, and Scripture takes that ordinary word and does something startling with it: God says of certain people that He Himself is their portion. That is the only sense the word carries here.
And here is the paragraph that matters most in this article, said plainly. There is no ask on this page. Nothing here suggests you give anything to anybody, there is no link and no cause anywhere in it, and this site will never once tell you that generosity produces a return, in any form, however carefully it is put. That wire does not exist here and it never will. You sorted something for a lad at work in January. That is between you and him and God, and this article has one interest in it: the nine months of not saying it.
That is the whole job. Not to grade what you did. Not to promise the caravan comes back. To sit in the passenger seat, and I would rather the word of God sat there, with the Holy Spirit doing the work, than that I guessed at what you are protecting.
An ordinary kindness, in the language of sacrifice
There is a single verse near the end of Hebrews that puts two ordinary words in an extraordinary sentence, and the Holy Spirit has been carrying it to men who cannot say things out loud ever since.
Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.Hebrews 13:16
Read the third word from the end.
Sacrifices. That is temple language. That is the vocabulary of the altar, of the thing brought and given up and not taken back. And the writer, who has spent twelve chapters on the temple and the priesthood and the offerings, applies it here to doing good and sharing what a person has.
Which means an arrangement sorted out for a twenty-three year old on a building site in January is, in the vocabulary of that letter, an offering. Not a nice gesture. Not a soft option. The same category of thing.
And then the last three words, which settle the case: are pleasing to God. Present tense, stated flatly, no conditions attached, and nothing about it being pending review.
You are not a man with something to hide. You are somebody who did something in the vocabulary of the altar and has been carrying it in the vocabulary of a secret, and the written word does not scold anybody for that. It renames the act, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes the difference between agreeing with a verse and being able to say a sentence out loud in a car.
And here is what is true of you tonight, before you tell her. You are provided for and your hands are open. His word says such sacrifices are pleasing to God, present tense, and His Spirit is the one who makes that a settled fact in a man rather than a line in a letter.
What the nine months were about
Think about what got you on that drive. It wasn't being caught. She was not catching you.
It was: I hope you know I'd have said yes. It was a woman who has been sitting beside you for a very long time telling you that the thing you have been protecting her from was never a thing she needed protecting from. You were starving to be told that, and you still are, and the written word treats that hunger as reasonable rather than as weakness, and it is the Holy Spirit who says so to a man and not merely about him.
That is the honest thing under the nine months. You were not hiding a mistake. You were carrying a decision alone because a man who talks about it feels like a man asking to be told he did the right thing, and you would rather carry it for nine months than be that man for four minutes.
Here is what the word has already settled about you, so that His Spirit can settle it in you tonight. The verdict is in and it is not pending. Jesus said a cup of cold water given to somebody small does not lose its reward, which is a startlingly low bar for a very high sentence, and He was in that car for the whole mile.
So here is the turn, and it is not that you were wrong to keep it quiet and it is not that you have to tell everybody.
You are provided for right now, in that car, with the caravan exactly as far away as it actually is and nothing here promising it comes any closer. Scripture puts doing good and sharing what you have in the vocabulary of the altar and calls the result pleasing to God, and it attaches no condition anywhere in the sentence. His Spirit is the one who carries that off a page and into a man who has been quiet for nine months.
Receiving it is not telling her tonight, although you might. It is putting down the idea that it was a secret. The nine months are welcome to have happened. They get no vote on what the thing actually was.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud with one hand open and turned upward. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and the authority in these words is His, delegated and never earned, carried by the Holy Spirit who was in that car for the whole mile. Jesus said in Matthew 17:20 that faith the size of a mustard seed is enough, and then named the part that settles it: speak to the mountain. So name the mountain honestly. It is not the lad and it is not the caravan. The mountain is the reason you have not said it in nine months, which is that saying it sounds like asking to be told you did right. Speak to that one, and however God answers and whatever He does with the years after this, the verdict was already in.
- Weight of a good thing I cannot say out loud, you are not shame, and you are answered here. Scripture calls doing good and sharing what a man has a sacrifice, and a thing spoken of in the language of the altar was never a secret to be carried.
- Reason I have not said it, that saying it sounds like asking to be told I did right, in the name of Jesus get out of my car. Nine months of quiet came out of that, and Christ is the One who has already given the verdict.
- God, You are my portion, and Your word says such sacrifices are pleasing to You, in the present tense, tonight. I thank You, because Your Spirit says whatever it is you did in January, I would have said yes, and my hand is open and turned over and I am going to say it.
